» History of Xinaliq

An ancient Greek scientist, Strabon, mentions in his 17-volume work named "Geography" (Coğrafiya) that there used to live 26 Albanian tribes in the Caucasian Albania and each of these tribes spoke their own language.

The Khinalug tribe is one of those 26 Albanian tribes and since that time they spoke their source language.

The "Khinalug" ethnic group has been living in the Caucasus for thousands of years, they have not lost their language, customs and traditions and have preserved them until nowadays.

Unfortunately, until the present day, no archaeological expedition has been sent to Khinalug in order to define its history and not a single excavation work has been done.

An interesting fact in the history of Khinalug is the ability to show its eight cemeteries.

No researches of the history of visible countless number of the cemeteries have been done in the village until the present day, beginning from the top of the hill named Giyad (Giyad) down to its foot and from within the village to the banks of Rutsosh (Rutsoş) and Deyirmanchay (Dəyirmançay) Rivers.

It is worth noting that the majority of the graves in the Khinalug cemeteries are quite big both from width and length point of view. A visual proof to that are the open graves, which are located along the road going to Rutsosh River. Some of the graves in Khinalug have 3 floors.

Here, the graves are placed one above another. However, excavation works would be able to determine how old these graves are.

Islam religion began to be disseminated in Khinalug in the 12th century by Abu Muslim (Əbu Müslim). The mosque that functions nowadays had been built during the same time and the people named this mosque the Abu Muslim Mosque.

There had been engraved "rune" inscriptions on 2 different stones placed at 2-metre height, on the right side, at the entrance to the mosque. It is assumed that these inscriptions are dated to the 3d-8th centuries B.C.

Though it was not able to completely translate the inscriptions, their approximate meaning is sunrise and beginning of a new history.

Before adopting Islam religion, the Khinalug people used to be fire worshippers. There is one place located at 4-5 km to the west from Khynalyg, from which natural gas is discharged, and this place is called "Atashgah" (Atəşgah).
